Most people looking for a quick weight loss solution think that calories are the "enemy", since eating excess calories can lead to excess fat, right? That is why most people also believe that the quickest way to lose weight is to cut way down on calories each day.
Makes sense to me! If a dieter on a weight loss diet is eating 2,500 calories per day and they decide to cut back to 1,500 calories per day – then surely that extra 1,000 calories will result in weight loss, right? Surely it can’t be that difficult to lose 10 pounds in 20 days or a month?
Well, actually no, this is not really true.
In fact, if you try to cut down on your calories too much (by starving yourself and cutting meals) you'll soon reach a dieting "plateau" (a point where the scales refuse to drop lower no matter how little your are eating).
Let’s talk about how the average person starts out on a new diet...
The scenario will go something like this...
One day you look in the mirror and see that your clothes are tighter than usual, and you look a little overweight... and you get “angry” with yourself. You’re angry with what you see in the mirror – and you decide that you’re going to lose weight no matter what.
You are filled with motivation and anger, and you are determined to do whatever it takes to get slimmer.
And what is the very first thing you do?
...You begin by skipping meals and cutting way back on calories in an attempt to starve yourself thin, because you're convinced that calories are the enemy.
This is most people begin their “starvation diet.”
So on the first day of dieting you feel totally “motivated” to lose weight and you
decide to skip breakfast. “I can lose 10 Pounds In 20 Days -
Unfortunately, this motivation doesn't last too long, because after a few hours your
hunger starts to make you feel weak -
So, by the time lunch-
So you possibly have a piece of fruit for lunch (or perhaps some other small food item instead), since you're still convinced that you can starve yourself to get thinner.
Finally, hours later when supper-
After a first day starving yourself you feel terrible, but you’re determined to stick
to your diet since you don't want quit so soon -
Or, if you’re particularly brave then you may even hold out for a week or so longer.
However, regardless of how long you hold out -
You see, even after two weeks of starving yourself, you won’t have achieved any lasting weight loss. In fact, your body will probably look the same as when you started.
So why is this?
This is because most of the weight lost during a “starvation diet” was just water , and not real fat loss after all.
Any “water weight” lost during a starvation diet will be regained immediately you stop dieting and start eating normally again.
And whenever you starve yourself you make a “hidden” factor come into play. If you starve yourself your body will start to burn fewer calories every day.
Let’s say you normally eat about 3,000 calories per day, then you suddenly cut back so that you're now eating only 1,000 calories per day.
Guess what happens next?
You’re eating 2,000 fewer calories per day, but your body will start to burn 2,000 fewer calories per day – thus your weight will remain the same even though you’re eating 2,000 less calories per day.
When this happens the scales stop going down, regardless of how little you are eating This is known as your weight loss “plateau.” At this point your promise to yourself to “lose 10 pounds in 20 days” looks decidedly hollow!
And this is why most starvation dieters just can’t make the scales go down any more after two weeks or so of dieting. They all hit that “plateau” where the scale just refuses to go down any further, no matter how little they are eating.
Now you know why you’ve always failed in the past when trying to starve yourself, because it just is not possible to lose weight by starving yourself.
The truth is, “lasting” weight loss cannot be achieved using a starvation diet.
Serious and long lasting weight loss is only achieved by giving your body the right types of calories in the right quantities and at the correct times of day...
Your body is like a big “engine” -
